You may wonder which keeps the best nutritional value – fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables. Let’s take a look at each:
Fresh fruits and vegetables are always best when they can be purchased locally and eaten fairly quickly. The longer you wait to eat a fresh food, the less vitamins & minerals it will retain. If it’s traveled half way across the world, it will have lost some of it’s nutritional content. It’s best to opt for fresh organic fruits & vegetables that are in season and that can be found at your local market. Find out which farms are growing these and you can even purchase from them directly.
Frozen food is blanched directly in hot water after it has been picked when it’s ripe to kill bacteria and stop enzyme activity that can spoil food. Then they’re flash frozen, which tends to preserve nutrients. This is a great option for foods that are not seasonal and that come from far away. Organic hits are frozen berries that can be defrosted and added to your yogurts, juices and sorbets and frozen vegetables such as spinash that retains its folate better when frozen! Make sure you buy just the natural fruits & vegetables without any other added ingredients.
The canning process tends to result in nutrient loss so this is your last option if the other 2 are not available. The worst part of canned foods is that they are often packaged in cans that are lined with BPA which is a hormonal disruptor and sugar is often added.
Did you every wonder what it would be like to use a cosmetic product that is 100% natural? After working more than 20 years in the cosmetic industry, I wondered that too. If you want to use a cosmetic product that is 100% natural, then it’s going to be an oil-based product and not a creme or lotion. A creme or lotion contain the most synthetic chemicals and petroleum by-products, fillers, preservatives and emulsifiers of which many can create health concerns. Some people believe applying oil, especially to acne-prone skin, will clog pores, cause breakouts, or leave a greasy film. The truth is, most natural oils are easily absorbed, not greasy, and are noncomedogenic. Oils are perfect for all skin types and stimulate the natural moisturising process of the skin. At Make My Day Cosmetics, we blend essential oils with base oils so that you can also benefit from all the plant and flower’s properties which enter your blood stream upon application. You skin and body will enjoy the benefits.
A question I often get is, “can I apply oil under my makeup”? The answer is yes. You need to apply your face oil and let your skin absorb it for 5 minutes. Then pat dry with a tissue before applying your makeup.
The anti-aging power treatment:
Forever 25 anti-aging face oil to be applied in the morning and in the evening and a face toner of your choice that corresponds to your skin type (acne, normal, dry & oily) to be used before the face oil application. Forever 25 anti-aging face oil formula contains neroli, lavender and lemon which fight the visible signs of ageing.
Did you ever wonder what the difference between juicing and blending is? Well, the good news is that they are both good for you! The major difference is that with blending, the fibre remains in your fruits and vegetables where as juicing eliminates the fibre in the food. The other big difference is that juice gets absorbed by your body much quicker which allows you cells to be fed and detoxed faster.
The decision to do either one is entirely up to you. If you like bulkier drinks and need the fibre intake, definitely choose the blending option and make smoothies. If you are eating enough fibre in your diet and prefer a smoother juice, then juicing is your solution. This is a great way to get additional vitamins & minerals in your diet!
Here’s my green juice recipe which I make every weekend:
This recipe is for 2 servings:
2 handfuls of spinach
1 parsley head
6 celery stalks
1 piece of ginger (3cm)
Juice all the ingredients together and enjoy within 10 minutes of making your juice so as to benefit from all the vitamins & minerals. Always privilege organic fruits and vegetables so as to reduce your pesticide intake.
Enjoy & be healthy!
While you are making an effort to eat fresh food of the best quality, did you know that the cookware you use could make the difference between your food being healthy and not?
You’ve probably heard that aluminium cookware can lead to Alzheimer’s disease, that copper pots will leach posion into your food and that the nonstick pans with the black coating can cause cancer.
Current studies have not been able to make a direct link of aluminium cookware with Alzheimer’s. Copper pans now have a protective stainless steel finish. As for nonstick cookware, it is best to opt for PFOA free and PTFE free cookware. PFOA is a toxicant and carcinogen in animals. Exposure has been associated with increased cholesterol and uric acid levels, and recently higher serum levels of PFOA were found to be associated with increased risk of chronic kidney disease. PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene & best known as Teflon) is the coating in your pan. The coating will easily get scratched and then the aluminium in the base is leeched into your food. Teflon’s own scientists have said that the product will release fumes that can cause flu-like symptoms in cases of overheating at 350°C / 662°F.
Cookware safety often relates to factors in your control: the quality of the pots you buy, their care, and choosing the right pan for the job.
You will find below a short review of the most popular cookware types so that you can choose the best option for your health needs.
1. Enamelled coated cast iron
This safe cookware is great for making soup, stews, and baking. It can be used on the stove and in the oven. Heats and cools slowly, distributing heat well. The only down size is that it’s heavy.
Easy to control and fast, even heating. Great to make stocks, and cream- or egg-based sauces. Stainless-steel lining provides durable, nonporous finish and keeps copper salts out of food.
3. Stainless Steel
Heats quickly and withstands high temperatures. Good for high-heat searing, stir-frying, and low-fat cooking.
Allows for low-fat cooking with less oil and butter. Easy to clean. Once coating is scratched off, you should stop using it. Buy it PFOA free and PTFE free.
My preference goes for enamelled coated cast iron and stainless steel cookware. I’m able to cook everything and manage to keep the maximum amount of vitamins and minerals with the least amount of toxins.

A mug with warm water and the juice of 1/2 lemon should be the first thing that goes into your mouth and one of the first things you do in the morning. Here’s why:
1. Boosts your immune system
Lemons are high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure.
2. Balances pH
Lemons are an alkaline food, even though everyone thinks they are acidic. They taste acid, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline. An alkaline body will help you fight disease.
3. Helps with weight loss
Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings.
4. Aids digestion
The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and wakes the body. Lemons are high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen toxins in the digestive tract.
5. Acts as a gentle, natural diuretic
Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.
6. Clears skin
The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.
Try it out for 2 weeks and see how you feel.
